Mastering the Balance Between Career and Family with Elegance
In our ongoing series "Overcoming Barriers," we have dealt with the diverse challenges that women face in the workplace. A central theme that constantly emerges is work-life balance – a balancing act that pulls many of us in different directions, between the demands of our careers and the needs of our families.
Many of us feel overwhelmed by the constant demands of work and personal obligations, battling a pervasive sense of guilt. This feeling that someone is always coming up short, whether at home or in the office, is a ubiquitous challenge.
As a mother, daughter, and businesswoman, I am familiar with the complex challenges arising from the different professional and family dynamics. It's a balancing act that requires not only understanding but also practical solutions.
Naturally, companies play a crucial role in supporting their employees to find a healthy balance. Flexible working hours, mentoring and support networks, health and wellness programs, parental leave and return programs, and a culture of respect are essential building blocks to strengthen women in their dual roles. We are increasingly seeing this work being recognized, but the path ahead is still long, and it requires many hands to make a difference.
What can you do yourself?
- Understand the reality: The world is not designed for you to give 100% in both areas. You are the director of your life. There is no script with a 100% guarantee – each role is unique.
- Set clear boundaries: Between work and private life, to reduce the constant feeling of guilt.
- Learn to say "No": You are not a machine. It's important not to try to please everyone. This is your life, in which you play the leading role.
- Delegate: Assign tasks to colleagues, family, or friends. Not everything has to be perfect, "good enough" often suffices.
- Seek flexibility: In your work arrangement, to better accommodate the needs of you and your family.
- Communication is key: Talk about your needs, what is acceptable, and what is not. Open conversations promote understanding and support.
- Perfection is not always necessary: Sometimes, solutions that are "good enough" are completely sufficient. Reduce the pressure to make everything perfect.
- Be a role model: For your children, show them how a balanced family functions. Be bold and create a family life that lives in balance through your communication.
- Share the responsibility: If you are lucky enough to have a partner, share the duties. Parenthood is based on teamwork.
- Take time for yourself: To avoid exhaustion, even burnout. Only when you are healthy and happy can you be effective.
Overcoming the gap between career and family requires the commitment of individuals and organizations alike. By sharing our experiences and supporting each other, we can develop strategies that enable us to be successful in both our professional and personal lives.
This balancing act is a journey, not a one-time task. It's about setting priorities, seeking support, and finding strategies that work for our individual circumstances. Let's tackle these challenges together to shape a future where work-life balance is not just a goal but a lived reality.
